'Tis the Season

Ahhh christmas!! As a child we dream about the streets covered in snow (unfortunately this is a rarity in houston), santa, his elves, hot cocoa, the reindeer, and all that is Christmas. As college students, we often dream about this season, not merely for the Christmas cheer, but for four years of our lives Christmas equates to so much more.

Christmas means the end of a semester. Christmas means we survived another semester. Christmas means h o m e. As we’ve grown older Rach and Kenn have realized what the holiday season is all about...and that is family. Although we do enjoy the brain break and five weeks off from rigorous academics being able to spend time with our immediate and extended family is precious.

As we are away in college, no doubt enjoying ourselves and the memories we are making to last a lifetime, it is hard to think about all of the memories we are missing back home. We both come from families that are extremely close (maybe a little too close at times) that enjoy big dinners, sporting events, movies, and so much more together. When we are wrapped in our college bubble and realizing that yes...our families do have lives without us  can be a difficult pill to swallow.

This is why in the past few years the Christmas season has grown to be so much more than gifts and holiday cheer, it has manifested into a time of rest, relaxation, and family memories. Whether it is baking holiday cookies, or staying up into the wee hours of the night wrapping presents,  or merely sitting on the couch surrounded by our families, the Christmas season has a little extra sparkle we would have never seen coming.

We occasionally find ourselves wishing we were back in atx, but our time on break is special and something to cherish. These five weeks will fly by and the most important thing we can do is live in the moment, hold onto all the laughs, long nights with our families, and appreciate the little things.

Cheers, Kenn and Rach
